Oasis Bess Storage Project

Capacity
1.2 GWh
Location
Northern Cape, South Africa

Challenges

This large-scale BESS project required complex logistics coordination across multiple ports under extreme time and operational constraints. High-volume battery energy storage system (BESS) shipments arrived at Durban and Cape Town within a compressed two-week delivery window, with vessel limitations and restricted lifting capabilities further complicating discharge operations.

Strict hazardous cargo regulations imposed additional constraints, including a maximum three-day port storage limit, no double stacking, and mandatory 3-metre container separation. Transport planning was further impacted by the unavailability of abnormal load permits within the required timeframe, alongside port-specific limitations such as Durban’s reliance on shore-based lifting and Cape Town’s restriction on double handling.

Operational demands were intensified by significant storage requirements, with each container occupying approximately 49 m² and a total temporary footprint of around 15,000 m² needed for safe staging. These factors placed considerable pressure on port storage planning, yard capacity, and coordinated truck dispatch sequencing.

Outcome

ABC Cargo delivered rapid, high-pressure logistics execution through immediate regulatory alignment and implementation of hazardous storage separation requirements. We led the rapid redesign of compliant staging yard layouts to accommodate large-scale volume constraints while maintaining full safety compliance.

Our port-specific strategies ensured adaptive execution—leveraging shore-based lifting and alternative terminal solutions in Durban, while enabling direct vessel-to-truck discharge in Cape Town to minimise handling delays.

Through accelerated evacuation planning, coordinated truck dispatch, and close stakeholder alignment across suppliers, terminals, and transport teams, we maintained continuous logistics flow despite permit constraints and late confirmations.

This project demonstrates ABC Cargo’s proven expertise in managing high-risk, large-scale BESS logistics under extreme operational pressure while ensuring safety, compliance, and uninterrupted delivery performance.

Tournee Solar Project

Capacity
330 MW PV
Location
Mpumalanga, South Africa

Scope of Services

This project involved the logistics coordination and delivery of 145 × 40HQ containers of tracker components, including full sequencing aligned to installation priorities. ABC Cargo also managed laydown planning and optimisation, while coordinating closely between international suppliers and EPC site teams to ensure installation readiness.

Challenges

The initial delivery strategy relied on container-based transport, which limited offloading flexibility and created misalignment with site handling conditions. Additional constraints included installation workflow sequencing, on-site handling equipment availability, and restricted laydown area access and material flow.

These challenges introduced risks of inefficient offloading operations, potential installation delays, and increased on-site handling and rework if not addressed early in the process.

Outcome

ABC Cargo intervened early in the planning phase to identify delivery method risks before full mobilisation. Through execution-driven planning, the logistics approach was adjusted to align with installation workflows and on-site realities.

We evaluated both container delivery and tautliner transport, ultimately recommending tautliner delivery as the more suitable solution for South African site conditions. This optimisation improved handling efficiency and reduced on-site risk.

Continuous coordination between the Chinese supplier, logistics teams, and EPC stakeholders ensured clear alignment on local execution requirements and smooth delivery planning.

The final delivery strategy was fully aligned with installation sequencing and site execution requirements prior to peak delivery. This resulted in improved operational efficiency, reduced handling risk, and enhanced coordination across the project value chain.

Avondale Solar Project

Capacity
115 MW PV
Location
Northern Cape, South Africa

Scope of Services

ABC Cargo provided end-to-end logistics support for solar project cargo, including customs clearance, port handling, warehousing, inland transportation, and coordinated site offloading and laydown management.

Challenges

This project required the rapid establishment of a fully operational laydown and offloading team within one week to align with vessel arrival schedules. Execution was further intensified by the accelerated preparation and approval of RAMS and safety documentation, as well as the urgent mobilisation of equipment such as forklifts and telehandlers.

Additional challenges included the deployment of trained and compliant local operators and the complex coordination between a Chinese EPC contractor and South African site stakeholders. All logistics interfaces—from port to transport to site—had to be seamlessly aligned within extremely tight timelines.

Outcome

ABC Cargo demonstrated rapid mobilisation capability by deploying a full local offloading team within seven days of instruction. We ensured full compliance readiness through the swift preparation of RAMS and safety documentation aligned with EPC and site requirements.

Our asset availability model enabled immediate deployment of suitable material-handling equipment, while our EPC interface expertise supported effective coordination between Chinese engineering teams and South African site operations.

Through bilingual technical communication and integrated execution planning, we bridged international and local operational standards, ensuring smooth coordination across all project stakeholders.

Offloading operations commenced immediately upon vessel arrival with no programme delays, significantly improving execution efficiency and strengthening coordination across all logistics and site teams.

Ukuqala Substation Project

Equipment
132 kV Transformer (74 tons)
Location
De Aar, Northern Cape, South Africa

Scope of Services

ABC Cargo provided specialised transport and site delivery services for a 74-ton, 132 kV transformer to the De Aar substation. In addition, we delivered on-site technical logistics support to ensure installation readiness and seamless integration into the project programme.

Challenges

Following delivery to site, it was identified that the transformer had arrived in an incorrect orientation for installation alignment. This presented a significant risk to the project schedule, including potential installation delays, crane rescheduling, additional costs, and disruption to the EPC programme if not resolved rapidly.

Outcome

ABC Cargo responded immediately, resolving the issue within 48 hours of identification. Leveraging our specialised equipment network, we mobilised a heavy-duty turning table system to site, enabling the safe and efficient rotation of the transformer into its required installation position.

Through close coordination with installation teams and end-to-end management of the corrective operation, we restored site readiness without impacting the overall project timeline.
